Nobody Likes Milhouse! (October 2023)

A little late on the October blog, but if you thought I was done with these (Or, I dunno, thought about them at all) then you're in luck because I'm back again with another look back at what was ultimately a pretty brisk October, all things considered. Little bit of stuff went down, enough for at least a thousand words, so let's do it to it.

Note that I'm going to refrain on talking about the biggest issue right now involving what is going on in Gaza. It's a serious situation that's way too frustrating to do on a blog that's mostly going to dunk on a goofy billionaire, so yeah.

I'm gonna start this off with the wrestling front because there's quite a lot to talk about this month. Mostly with AEW. That's a good thing and a bad thing it turns out. Start with the good, move into the bad. AEW Wrestledream opened the month with what was all around a strong event that was headlined with the debut of Adam Copeland, formerly WWE's Edge. Copeland had felt his time with WWE had reached its course and for him to do some of the final things he wants to do in the business before he wraps it up, including work with Christian Cage once more, it's gonna have to be in AEW.

Of course, that led to a lot of derision from WWE fans, who a month ago would tell you how much they love Edge and support his decisions and now that he's in AEW he's a traitor and was never good and they should take him out of the WWE Hall of Fame. If that's you, then please get out of the wrestling fandom. If you claim to respect someone but turn on them so flippantly if they pursue other companies then you were never a real fan and you respect nobody but Vince McMahon.

The Adam Copeland news, by all accounts, should have been the biggest news of the month, but that wouldn't be the case. Due to baseball, AEW Dynamite would be bumped to a Tuesday edition on October 10. And unlike in the Wednesday Night Wars era, WWE actually put in the effort to crush AEW with an overstuffed NXT which featured Cody Rhodes, John Cena, the Undertaker and many more. And if the intention was to expose Tony Khan as wrestling's Milhouse, then mission accomplished because Tony Khan showed his full ass over the course of the week. Raging at trolls, commenting on every little thing, taking pot shots at Triple H and Shawn Michaels, and even taking a shot at Vince being a sex pest and HOO BOY, that's going to age like milk briefly.

I like AEW. Still prefer it over WWE. But even I'll admit it's been losing a lot of its luster lately, and having the billionaire owner of the company, white claw in one hand, phone in the other, making a fool of himself, doesn't endear me to this company having a rosy future. I know nobody will be able to tell him no, but someone needs to convince Tony to calm down and not feel the need to go on tirades whenever the crippling realism that he'll never win over WWE starts to hit him. He is becoming the main character of AEW, and that's not a good thing at all. And speaking of not good things and AEW, remember my comment about Tony's shot about Vince's sexual exploits? Well, Tony hopes you did before he decided to bring Ric Fucking Flair into the company.

Because you know what this company that promotes itself as the future of the industry needs? A 74 year old sex offender who keeps threatening us with another match, even though the last time he competed in his "final match" he nearly died. Yeah, let's sign him to a two year deal and hock his piss water energy drink. This company can't book two women's matches on one episode of Dynamite, but can bring in Meltman with the power to melt. All to be a piece to the impending retirement of Sting, to which I fear, now that all the stars are aligning, that Sting's final match at Revolution 2024 will be against Ric Flair. Bell rings and Ric flops dead on the mat like Tommy Cooper. TNA is coming back and right now AEW is feeling an awful lot like early 2010s TNA. And that's NOT a good thing. And speaking of not good things...

Youtube decided to finally put their foot down on ad blockers, which means that the site becomes inaccessible with one installed. And here's my issue on that. Ads on Youtube wouldn't be an issue if they were, say, an ad before or after the video. Or even one in the middle like how Tubi usually handles things. But when a video can have half a dozen midroll ads in a short video, it makes watching the content not worthwhile. This is also to force Youtube Premium on more users in a rather callous manner, which again, I'd gladly do, were it affordable. 139 a year for what is a free site otherwise is really gross. I have a workaround for now, but we'll see how long that lasts.

Speaking of egregious price points, I decided to pick up a month of PlayStation Plus Premium in October as I continued my run of Platinum Trophy-ing several more games. To show how much progress has gone, I ended September with 13 Platinum. In October, I brought it up to 21, adding eight more games to the pile. Lego Marvel Superheroes 2 (Fun like most Lego games but still a slog), South Park: The Stick of Truth, Intelligent Qube, Jumping Flash, Saints Row: The Third, Battle for Bikini Bottom Rehydrated, Medievil, and the most challenging of all... My Friend Peppa Pig. Look, I wanted a joke platinum and if I was going to go for one, that would be it. Got a few other games I'd love to run through, but we'll see what comes next.

I also bit the bullet and bought WWE 2K23 for the platinum. So far it's fun. Not wild about the counter system, but I do feel the game is an improvement over previous 2K games. I'm halfway through the platinum collecting and got through the worst area of the game, MyFaction. A lame gacha card thing that requires actual currency in hoping to get the best cards. You play a bunch of mundane matches for some currency, but it's a grind. Especially with Faction Wars, which requires 100 wins to pop the trophy. Still have a bit to go with the other modes, but I was so happy to be done of the MyFaction crap.

Other than that, I injured one of my fingers. Don't hit doors, folks. Thankfully it's not broke, but still sore to move a little. Definitely recovering. I collected a few comics this month including some Simpsons comics. Might start collecting more overtime as they're fun reads. Still no luck finding a copy of Slime Doesn't Pay, and might still have to resort to an ebook. Giving it one more month and we'll see. Blog-wise, this was a slower month. Wanted to do more but didn't have the energy. I still intend to review the new Goosebumps show soon before Disney's inevitable deleting of the series from the service. As well as continuing to blog about the Friday the 13th books. A busier week meant no chance to do my regular Halloweenathon, which stunk, but whatever. I intend to do a make-up version sometime in November.

And that's October in a nutshell. Moved super quick. Quicker than most months honestly. And seeing as we already got snow on the ground, it's looking to be a quick November into a wintery December. Birthday's this month so that's something, and by then I should finally be playing either Super Mario Wonder or Super Mario RPG. We'll see. Either way, should hopefully be a quaint little month.
